In wartime laundry is one of the most important jobs around. The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in the year 1865. Each soldier had his laundry done and paid for it by having the fee deducted from his pay. The laundress was then paid by the Army. The cost per soldier was 50 cent per month. If an officer was currently unmarried his fee was 1.00 to 2,00 per month. If the officer was married he paid four dollars per month. The laundress’ job was not an easy one. Each did the laundry for 20 to 30 soldiers. In these lean times, a laundress was well paid.

During the revolutionary war, there were British armed forces that came into and occupied New York City. General George Washington and his soldiers were having a hard time gathering information about their movement. In 1778 however, there was a young officer who had a group of men and women known as the Culper Spy Ring. This group began to gather information about the British and as they traded for supplies they would share their information. One woman began to use her laundry to give information. She would put the laundry on her clothesline in such a way that it left signals telling them where the spas should gather and thus exchange information more easily.

Another interesting military fact concerns the British military. During their war in Northern Ireland, the British military found itself losing many troops and civilians because of the bombings taking place. The British were trying to figure out who was making the bombs and where they were being made. The idea came that they operate a laundry. A simple plan was made to build the laundry and use some trusted people who lived in the town and a few of their own personnel to operate it. They could then color-code special discount tickets offering two loads of laundry for the price of just one. This color coding identified the different streets within the town. This meant when customers brought their laundry into the laundromat intelligence was able to figure out where they were located. As the laundry was being processed by washing, pressing, or dry cleaning each garment was sent through an analyzer. This was a special analyzer disguised to look like any other piece of laundry equipment. They were checking for the residue that would indicate bomb-making. Once it was determined the residue was present, the military could then know for certain which homes the laundry came from and an arrest could be made.
