Eco-Friendly Laundry Tips

When compared to in-home or in-unit laundry rooms, common area laundry rooms are proven to save energy and water every time.  A study of apartment complexes that offered coin laundry in Raleigh NC and other laundry facilities in the apartment were found to use three times as much water when compared with one that offered an on premise common are laundry facility.   Not only did the in home laundry use three times the amount of water but they also were found to use five times the amount of gas or electricity.

Energy Saving Tips | Coin Laundry Raleigh NC

One of the biggest cost savings comes with the replacement of washers and dryers.  If just 20 of the conventional commercial type washers were replaced with one that is an Energy Star qualified washer it is estimated there would be a savings of 2,379 kWh of electricity per year.  You would also see a savings of 69,496 thousand gallons of water.  The emission of carbon dioxide would also be reduced by 3,663 pounds in that same year.  That’s like not driving your automobile for 128 days.  So now you are beginning to see how we can reduce our carbon footprint just when it comes to doing the laundry.

One study points out that if we make certain to purchase the Energy Star appliances we can save 360 million dollars in energy costs per year.  We would also reduce greenhouse gas emissions to equal the emission produced by 215,000 cars being driven.  The amount of water saved would equal 20 billion gallons.

The following eco-friendly tips can help you stay as “green” as possible but allow you to get your laundry clean and fresh.

  • When setting the water temperature on your washer use cold.  This will save 90 percent of the energy it takes to heat up the water.
  • When buying your laundry detergent choose one that is formulated to work well in colder temperatures.  Look at the packaging.  Choose one that is either a concentrate with a smaller packaging or one that has a bottle you can recycle or reuse.
  • You may also want to look at switching to a natural detergent and stain remover.  These tend to have little or no chemicals in them and are plant based.  Great for those with any allergies.
  • Make it a rule to only wash full loads of clothes.  Doing so will reduce the amount of loads you do each week.  It will also save you on water and energy costs not to mention time.
  • Take care not to overload the machine.  This can keep clothing from getting clean.  If you have a front loading machine then 3/4 full is the recommended load size.
