The first thing we want to emphasize is to keep this room clean. We have a tendency to use the laundry room to store things that really don’t belong there. Move all of these items to a new home. Try to not let them creep back in. This will give you the room you need to get busy and organized.
Once everything is out of the way now you can do some cleaning. One of the first things to do is clean your shelves and cabinets. Clean them out and wipe all of them down. Use a wet rag and get all the dust and lint off. This seems to attach itself everywhere. Remove any splashes of detergent or sprays as well.
Run your washing machine with no clothing but using hot water put in 2 cups of vinegar and run a complete cycle. This will clean the machine really well. Then take the time to properly wipe down the outside of the washer as well. Glass cleaner will add some great shine.
For the dryer take out your lint screen and soak it in some good hot water with some dish soap. Once it has soaked for a while you can use a soft brush to scrub it. If the knobs of either machine need it you can soak and scrub them as well. Wipe down the dryer to clean the outside. Check your dryer hose. Remove any lint buildup and vacuum it out as well. This will help prevent a fire.
Sweep and mop the floor really well. The following are a few other tips for organizing the laundry room:
- Hang the ironing board either on a wall or the back of a door.
- Hang a rod or retractable drying line for items you do not want to place in the dryer.
- Add shelves to hold your detergent, bleach, and other laundry needs.
- Only keep the products you need and use.
- Keep your hangers in a pretty bin or basket.
- Use a divided laundry organizer to keep the laundry sorted and ready for the wash.
- Keep a small basket close by for stray things left in the pockets of clothes.
- A trash can is a great item to have in the room as well. Lint, used dryer sheets, and other small bits of paper will end up on the floor and that means a not so clean laundry room.
