It is important to note that washers have changed a whole lot over the last few decades. What used to be a simple wringer washer with no type of gadgets has morphed into technological, sleek, and much more complicated machines. The options for wash cycles seem unlimited which can be confusing and look complicated. The good news is that while once we were limited to a few choices now we can select the proper settings to keep our clothes looking their best. Most of these newer machines are designed to save us money as well.

The first step in the task of doing the laundry is a really important one, sorting. If you have clothes that are similar in color they can be washed together as one load. Often this may be a smaller load but in order to wash them properly, they need to be washed together. For example, you may have clothes that are dark in color. These need to washed in cold water so that there is less chance of colors bleeding on your other clothes. Cold water washing also keeps them from fading. Similarly, you will need to wash whites together to keep them white. Warm water settings can be used with your whites and bleach if needed. Once you have a habit of sorting your clothes into the proper loads the laundry task will get easier.

Every time you do a load of laundry there are three separate choices you will need to make:

  • Load Size and/or water level
  • Water Temperature for the wash and the rinse cycles
  • Cycle setting

The load size is usually either small, medium, large, or super. The following is a general idea from which to choose:

  • Small – 1/4 of the way full
  • Medium – 1/2 full
  • Large – More than 1/2 full
  • Super – Full capacity

Making the right choice for water temperature is crucial to helping your clothing to not stretch, fade, or shrink. To make certain you use the proper temperature examine the clothing label inside your garment. This will give you the correct information you need to wash your clothing the right way. Old school thinking was that only hot water washing would get clothes as clean as possible. Today we know that this is not true. Cold water washing will not harm fabrics and will save you money on utilities. Many detergents are formulated today to be used in cold water and will get your clothes really clean.
